Guide

Common container number mistakes at gates, depots, and surveys.

Most bad unit records come from a small set of repeatable mistakes: wrong owner prefix, transposed serial digits, bad check digits, or damage notes tied to the wrong box.

Typical failure points

The same few mistakes keep showing up.

  • The owner prefix is read wrong, so the box is assigned to the wrong line or lessor.
  • Two serial digits are transposed during manual entry.
  • The check digit does not match, but the number still gets keyed into the system.
  • Photos or condition notes are attached to the wrong unit after the handoff.

What helps

Check the prefix first, then validate the full number.

Prefix checking catches the wrong owner problem early. ISO 6346 validation catches many bad serial and check digit combinations before they turn into operational cleanup work.
