Guide

How to identify a container owner prefix.

The owner prefix is the code at the front of the container number. It tells terminals, depots, surveyors, truckers, shipping lines, and leasing teams who the box belongs to.

Definition

The owner prefix is the first three letters in the ISO 6346 number.

That code identifies the registered owner or operator of the container and is one of the first things a terminal or depot team should confirm when a number looks wrong.

Where it helps

Owner prefix checking reduces wrong-box records.

When the prefix is wrong, the record usually inherits the wrong owner too. That is why prefix checking is useful at gates, in yards, during surveys, and before interchange paperwork is completed.
